My journey towards veganism began when I was only 11 years old! I grew up on a farm outside of East London, one of the biggest chicken factories in South Africa which is called Rainbow Chickens now. It was a massive farm with multiple chicken houses as big as football fields. They had to be very far apart incase one “house” caught a disease.
I remember the smell and the warmth of those places, with straw and poop on the floor, and water and food containers flying from the ceiling.
My family decided to move to Port Alfred a while later and start their own chicken farm there.
… This is when I became a vegetarian … I walked into the kitchen one day while my mother was cooking and said – “I will no longer eat meat or eggs.” She went along with it thinking that I would last a month max.
Hmmm well, let’s just say that everyone was surprised when many years later, I still had not touched any steak or biltong even though it had been offered humorously multiple times.
Through the years, I wanted so badly to give up dairy as well! I was so addicted to cheese that this seemed impossible! So I made a plan to slowly stop eating dairy – product by product or more like category by category ahaha We all have an addiction to cheese, it’s been proven by billions of humans. But I needed to stop.
And 7 years ago, I did.
Veganism need not be expensive or complicated!
-The Yummy Vegan Life
I was thinking about it the other day, Back then there was no vegan milk – no vegan choccie – no vegan cheese – at least in my country There was only one vegan meat alternatives on the market. But I knew that even if I had to use coconut oil in place of butter ON BREAD and make my own almond milk, I had to go vegan.
It has been a wonderful journey. I haven’t once regretted giving up meat, eggs or dairy. Yes, at first I totally missed cheese, I’m not going to lie here, once or twice I snuck a slice because the cravings were incredible – but you allow yourself that cheat – and then you buy some vegan cheese and pretend it’s good because at least the cows have one more ally in this World 🙂
And that’s how I see myself, a friend of the animals, a friend of the Earth, and a friend to myself because I feel fantastic with this healthy lifestyle.
However, this blog isn’t 100% about veganism. It’s about adding more fruit and veg to your meals. So often we have a bunch of something and wonder how we can make it yummy because we don’t just feel like a it boiled with butter again. This blog is to show you how to use every fruit and veg in a new way, and some old ways.
