Spicy Pea Fritters

Who doesn’t like a bit of crunch! I really love creating new recipes, and this one came to me when I was going though a gluten free phase of my life. I decided to eat less flour and so began looking for replacements. Chickpea flour seemed the obvious choice here, as it’s tasty and cheap! I enjoy them with a green salad. Especially that one to the right 🙂

These crisp bites are so good with a little sweet chili sauce or mayo. Ideal served as a side dish or add to your child’s lunch box (if they don’t like chilis, omit).

Serving Ideas

Spicy Pea Fritters are versatile and can be enjoyed in various ways:

  1. As a Sandwich Filling: Spread vegan mayo on whole-grain bread, add lettuce, tomato slices, and a Spicy Pea Fritter for a hearty sandwich.

  2. With a Fresh Salad: Serve them atop a bed of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and drizzle with a tangy vinaigrette.

  3. As an Appetizer: Make mini fritters for a delightful party snack. Pair with a zesty dip for extra flair.

Ingredients and Substitutes

This recipe really uses simple ingredients that you will probably have in your home.

  • Chickpea flour can be swapped with almond flour
  • Red onion can replace white onion for a milder flavor.
  • Chillis – Replace the chillis with herbs

Cooking Tips

  • Ensure the mixture is well combined to prevent fritters from falling apart during frying.
  • Use a medium heat setting to achieve a golden-brown, crispy exterior.
  • Test the oil’s temperature by dropping a small piece of the mixture. It should sizzle and rise to the surface.

Equipment used to make Spicy Pea Fritters

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Frying Pan
  • Spatula
  • Slotted Spoon
  • Paper Towels (for draining)

Storing Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze fritters for up to 1 month.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups or 450 grams / 1 pound cooked green peas, mashed
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder adjust to taste
  • 1/2 cup or 120 grams chickpea flour
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

Prepare the Mixture:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed green peas, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin powder, chili powder, chickpea flour, and a pinch of salt.
  • Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated. The mixture should hold together when pressed.

Shape the Patties:

  • Take a handful of the mixture and shape it into a small patty or fritter. Repeat until all the mixture is used. You should get about 10-12 fritters.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a frying pan, heat enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan over medium heat. Let it get hot but not smoking.

Fry the Fritters:

  • Carefully place the fritters in the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches if necessary.
  • Cook each side until it turns golden brown and crispy, approximately 3-4 minutes per side.

Drain and Serve:

  • Once golden and crisp, use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil. Place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serve and Enjoy:

  • Serve the Spicy Pea Fritters hot with your favorite sauce or chutney.
